Block output entries in BC 26
Hello reader, in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, proper management of the item master data is essential for the control of production processes. One of the lesser-known but extremely useful fields for those who manage production is “Blocked Production”, present both on the item master data and on the variant.
📌 Where is it?
The Production Blocked field is located:
On the item card, in the Replenishment section.
On the variants of the article, useful when you want to block only some specific configurations.
🛑What does this field do?
When the Production Blocked field is active (i.e., set to Output), Business Central prevents that item (or variant) from being placed on new production orders. This means that:
You will not be able to create new production orders with that item.
An error or warning is reported when you try to use it in a production context.
Existing orders are not automatically canceled, but manual review may be required.
- You can still have lines in the request and planning worksheet, but you won’t be able to perform the action and create the production order. If you block the production of an item, we recommend that you change the replenishment method so that the item is excluded from planning.
🧩 When to use it?
Here are some typical scenarios where it can come in handy:
✅ End of life of a product: the article no longer has to be produced, but remains in the archive for consultation or history.
✅ Item temporarily suspended: for example, awaiting quality approval or certifications.
✅ Managing obsolete variants: you want to produce only a few specific variants of an item.
✅ Transition phase: You are migrating production to new or replacement code.
⚙️ What does it NOT do?
It is important to remember that the “Blocked Productions” field does not prevent the item from being used for sales or purchases, unless other fields are also blocked (e.g. “Blocked”, “Blocked Purchases”, “Blocked Sales”).
💡 Practical advice
If you’re working in a production environment with variants, use variation-level locking to maintain flexibility: you can continue to produce valid variants without having to duplicate the item.
🧭 Conclusion
The Blocked Production field is a valuable ally for those who manage the supply chain in Business Central. Getting it right means avoiding planning errors and ensuring that only approved products enter the production flow.
